About the Ladies Sangeet Book

How did a girl born in the UK, in the late 1980s become so passionate about Boliyan? Two words:

Punjab, Family.

Going back and fourth from Punjab from as young as 3 months, the culture and traditions became a big part of my life. Throughout my teenage years I would spend a lot of time with my biggest influencer, my Puah. I’d be singing along to her Boliyan at weddings, we were practically a duo. Over the years I started to listen to folk Punjabi songs and have connected with them. I’ll always have her to thank for this.

The best part of a wedding (in my eyes), especially for girls are those special moments with your nearest and dearest that lead up to the wedding day. The ladies sangeet gives the ladies the space to laugh and cry together, to reflect on their ancestors lives through singing Boliyan as well as share the excitement of the new chapter of their daughter / son.

In this day and age, a lot of people find it difficult to connect with traditional folk songs and their meanings, which is why I have I initially started this Ladies Sangeet Book, with some simple Boliyan and their translations.

The Ladies Sangeet Book includes Suhaag and Ghodiyan, the traditional poems sang at weddings, Dholki Songs like ‘Latteh Di Chadar’ ‘Fullan De Bahar’ a Surinder Kaur Medley as well as whole load of Giddha Boliyan to get people up and dancing! The Boliyan are wrote in English Transliterations as well as Translations.
